Writing pages that rank in Google and get cited by AI search

AI assistants cite sources differently to how Google ranks them. The good news is that the overlap is larger than the difference.

Writing pages that rank in Google and get cited by AI search

A growing share of searches now end in an answer rather than a click. That has changed how content needs to be written, though less dramatically than the panic suggests.

Answer first, then explain

Lead each section with a direct answer in one or two sentences, then expand. This helps human scanners, it helps featured snippets, and it gives an AI model a clean passage to quote. Burying the answer under three paragraphs of context serves nobody.

Make passages independently quotable

AI systems retrieve passages, not pages. A paragraph that only makes sense after reading the two before it will not be cited. Each section should stand alone well enough to be understood if it were pulled out and shown by itself.

Be specific and attribute

Numbers, dates, named sources and concrete examples are what get quoted. Vague claims are not, because a model has no way to verify them and no reason to prefer them over a more precise source.

Structure genuinely helps

Clear heading hierarchy, FAQ blocks with real questions, tables for comparisons and lists for sequences. Schema markup on top of that. None of it is a trick, it is just making the structure of the content machine readable as well as human readable.

What has not changed

Expertise, first hand experience and being right still matter more than any formatting choice. The sites getting cited by AI assistants are largely the sites that were already worth reading. Format helps a good page get found. It does not rescue a thin one.
