Shopify or WooCommerce: choosing without the sales pitch

Both platforms can run a serious store. The right answer depends on four specific things about your business, not on which one an agency prefers to build.

Shopify or WooCommerce: choosing without the sales pitch

Most comparisons of these two platforms are written by someone who sells one of them. Here is the honest version, which is that the decision comes down to four questions about your business.

How unusual is your pricing?

Shopify handles conventional pricing beautifully and unconventional pricing awkwardly. Quantity breaks, customer specific rates, configurable products priced by dimension, all of these are harder on Shopify and native on WooCommerce. If your pricing needs a paragraph to explain, that pushes toward WooCommerce.

Who maintains it?

Shopify maintains itself. Hosting, security patching, PCI compliance and uptime are handled. WooCommerce is your responsibility, which means either an in house developer or a maintenance retainer. Not budgeting for that is the most common WooCommerce mistake.

How much does content matter?

If your ecommerce sits inside a large content operation, guides, editorial, a serious blog, WooCommerce has an advantage because WordPress is a genuinely good content platform and Shopify is not.

What is your realistic scale?

Shopify absorbs traffic spikes without anybody thinking about it. WooCommerce handles high traffic well but only with proper hosting and caching, which is a decision somebody has to make and pay for.

A rough rule

If your products are conventional and you want to run a store rather than a server, Shopify. If your pricing or content needs are unusual and you have technical support available, WooCommerce. If you are between the two, pick Shopify, because the operational overhead of WooCommerce is the thing people underestimate.
